CHITOSAN FUNCTIONS
CHITOSAN FOR SKINCARE
FILM-FORMING
Forms a biocompatible, protective film over the skin to lock in moisture and nourish the skin.
SKIN BARRIER SUPPORT
Supports the skin's natural repair process. Replenishes the skin's moisture barrier, contributing to firmness and elasticity for an overall youthful appearance.
ANTIOXIDANT ACTION
Provides antioxidant fortification to protect the skin from the effects of environmental, oxidative and UV damage.
BIOCOMPATIBLE
Ideal for daily skin treatment. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin or skin prone to conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis or rosacea.
CHITOSAN FOR WOUND HEALING
HAEMOSTATIC
Chitosan is naturally haemostatic and helps control bleeding via the promotion of platelet adhesion and aggregation, induction of erythrocyte aggregation, acceleration of fibrin clots, and inhibition of fibrinolysis.
NATURAL PAIN RELIEF
Chitosan blocks nerve endings, reducing pain. Physical absorption of proton ions released at the inflammatory site contributes to pain and inflammation relief. A cooling effect is achieved due to chitosan's water-retaining properties, resulting in pain relief.
BARRIER AGAINST INFECTION
Chitosan forms a barrier over compromised skin, which offers protection against infection and helps to retain a moist wound environment, which maintains the proper micro-environment for rapid and natural healing.
INFLAMMATION CONTROL
Chitosan helps to control inflammation by promoting the reduction of key inflammatory signals in the wound. Chitosan also contributes to macrophage activation and stimulates intracellular signaling cascades that initiate the wound repair process.
TISSUE REGENERATION
Chitosan forms a 3D matrix, encouraging cell migration and cell proliferation. Chitosan induces important growth factors and stimulates angiogenesis, granulation, and epithelisation that contribute to faster wound healing.
CHITOSAN FOR SCAR HEALING
PROTECTIVE FILM
Chitosan is positively charged, while our skin is negatively charged. Chitosan adheres to human tissue via electrostatic binding. Chitosan forms a cationic, protective film over the skin, offering a barrier to moisture loss, and protection against infection and contamination, contributing to an optimal skin or wound micro-environment.
ENHANCED HYDRATION
Chitosan provides immediate hydration and moisture upon application, and the protective film it forms helps to seal in moisture.
REDUCED IFLAMMATION
Chitosan contributes to the decreased production of key inflammation signals that cause swelling and irritation, and shortens the inflammatory healing phase, promoting faster healing my balancing the immune response.
REMODELLING OF SCAR TISSUE
Chitosan stimulates the remodelling of scar tissue and supports epidermis regeneration and improved aesthetic flexibility with less visible scars. This ability to regulate collagen and production and organisation helps reduce the formation of disorganised, dense and raised scar tissue.
CHITOSAN IN LIPOSAN ULTRA®
LipoSan Ultra® is the patented blend of chitosan used in our LipoSan Fibers + Vitamin C supplement. It binds with dietary fat in the stomach and separates it from the digesting food. This results in an emulsion that forms a gel around the dietary fat and prevents it from being absorbed in the body.
What makes LipoSan Ultra® stand out is that it is not digested in the gut. Instead, it is fermented thanks to colonic bacteria, resulting in an increased production of metabolites. These are small molecules, end products of metabolism, that drive vital biological activities in the human body and are known to play a significant role in safeguarding our organism.
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
As a naturally fibrous substance, chitosan can assist with weight management thanks to its ability to bind upon ingestion with dietary fats, cholesterol, bile acid and gut toxins. It quickly dissolves in stomach acid and binds dietary lipids, thus reducing intestinal lipid absorption. This significantly reduces calorie intake and promotes weight management.
LOWER CHOLESTEROL AND SYSTOLIC & DIASTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE
LipoSan Ultra® contributes to the maintenance of normal blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations*. As chitosan can facilitate weight and body fat adjustment, it subsequently helps to lower normal blood cholesterol levels, systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
NATURAL PREBIOTIC
Chitosan is also a valuable prebiotic, promoting colonic conditions. New research shows that chitosan has a positive effect on intestinal flora and contributes to improved digestion. With these newly discovered prebiotic properties, chitosan can improve digestion, support healthy intestinal flora and give the body more energy from each meal.

HAIR, SKIN & NAILS
This Icelandic formula contains an exclusively patented bioactive fiber, LipoSilica chitosan complex, supplemented with marine collagen Type II rich in GAGs, algal minerals, as well as vitamin C, zinc and selenium, to maintain normal hair, skin and nails and contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
IMPROVED DIGESTION
Studies show that chitosan contributes to improved digestion and has a beneficial effect on the intestinal flora by increasing the formation of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), thus giving the body more energy from food and important nutrients.
ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES
The antioxidative properties of chitosan help reduce lipid hydroperoxides and other uremic toxins in the gut, thereby reducing oxidative stress in the body. Less oxidative stress has positive effects on the health of the heart, kidneys and other organs, and good antioxidant activity contributes to body balance and faster cell formation. LipoSilica chitosan is therefore a good addition to the body's antioxidant system.
SUSTAINABLE SOURCING AND PRODUCTION OF CHITOSAN
Chitosan is extracted from chitin, the second-most abundant natural polymer in the world after cellulose. Chitin is also the most abundant naturally occurring polysaccharide that contains amino sugars. This abundance, combined with the specific chemistry of chitin and its derivative chitosan, make for an impressive array of applications, including skincare and wound healing.
ChitoCare sources its chitosan from the discarded exterior shells of the Pandalus borealis cold-water shrimp, which are a by-product of the Icelandic fishing industry. This upcycling of leftover materials helps to reduce waste, leaving a smaller environmental footprint. Furthermore, all our operations in Iceland are carried out with the use of renewable energy sources, including geothermal energy for electricity production and local aquifers for water sourcing.
The utilisation of marine stocks around Iceland is strictly regulated by the government to ensure self-sustainable use of natural resources, contributing to a more balanced marine environment. Chitosan has also proven to be an excellent alternative to synthetic, eco-harmful chemicals, rendering it a promising ingredient for a greener future.
